Essay Contest 2000 Winner"When I grow up I will never drink and drive because I know what can happen if you do. When I was three years old, two drivers who had been drinking alcohol and were driving too fast hit our car. Our car turned over on its side and the windows in our car broke and my hands got dragged for a long time before our car stopped. The doctors at the hospital were going to cut my right arm off below the elbow and didn't know if my left hand would also have to get cut off. I was moved to the Children's Hospital in San Diego and a bunch of doctors saved my hands. They took a big part of my stomach area and put it on my right arm and part of my stomach and behind was put on my left hand. I have had 13 operations and hundreds of visits to a physical therapist. I have had lots and lots of pain. I have had kids make fun of me and not want to hold my hands in circle games. I can't do lots of play things like my friends at school can - like playing on the bars and rings - but I keep trying. I am afraid to ride a bike or skate because I don't want any more pain in my hands. I think my hands are ugly and I wish that both of these drivers didn't hit us. I wish the accident never happened because now I will never have normal hands like my friends do. The two men who hit us never had to show up in court and only paid a little bit of money. I don't think they realize how their drinking alcohol caused me so much pain."
