We’ve all heard the term “pennies from heaven.” This year, MADD has been receiving just that from angel-like children! Various elementary schools in Orange County rallied their students and faculty to conduct a Penny Drive over the holiday season. “A penny drive?” Here at MADD, we were rather skeptical at first. Pennies are bulky, and heavy… and how much money could anyone bring in by collecting pennies? However, our determined supporters were not swayed. They collected pennies until they were over-flowing the classrooms, rolled them, deposited them, and excitedly presented MADD with the check of proceeds. Was that effort worth it? You be the judge. At Linda Vista Elementary in Mission Viejo, a contest was held to see which class could collect the most pennies during their penny drive. One first grade class collected over 55 pounds of pennies! The grand total of their contribution amounted to $618.00! Another noteworthy school was Marco Forester Middle School in San Juan Capistrano … in a single week they collected approximately 35,000 pennies! What does this all prove? Simply this: Everyone
Counts!
Throughout MADD's history, there have been many special people who have had a positive impact on our organization. As we celebrate our twentieth anniversary, we would like to honor these Difference Makers. Difference Makers are volunteers who have made a significant contribution to MADD's mission during the past twenty years. The selection committee reviewed the nominees and has selected MADD volunteers from all 50 states. A Difference Maker will be announced on the national MADD web site each day during 2000 - our anniversary year. MADD Orange County is pleased to announce that MADD, National awarded our very own Barbara Taylor as one of these driven Difference Makers. Barbara's day is June 14, 2000. Thank you, Barbara, for everything you've done for MADD, and congratulations! Together, we are making a difference! Together, we are making a difference! You are all to be congratulated. Due to your consistent efforts with
MADD, be it physical or financial, improvements are being made.
According to the most recent statistics available regarding
alcohol-related traffic crashes, 1998 was the safest year in Orange
County's history! This is wonderful news for all who use our roadways.
Yes - things are getting better, and yet, we have a long way to go
before our job is completed. Last year's 14,686 DUI arrests in Orange
County and 2,087 victims make this clear. We are currently working to bring back Soberman® so that we may continue to teach elementary children on their level about the dangers of alcohol. We are also looking for other avenues to effectively expand our youth programs, as well as our educational programs for DUI offenders designed to prevent recidivism. I would like to encourage you to continue in your outstanding support, which could allow us to revive many of our much-needed educational programs. Thank you for your help in the war against drunk driving. Sincerely, |
