DUI / Alcohol Statistics  for 2001-2002

"Alcohol-related" means that a driver or pedestrian had a measurable Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC)

Total traffic fatalities – 42,850

Alcohol-related – 17,970 (42% of total) (49 per day) (1 every 30 minutes), a 6.1% 1-year increase; 3rd consecutive annual increase.

Highest Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) in alcohol-related fatalities:

.01% - .07% – 2,335

.08% or higher – 15,635

Average BAC of most intoxicated driver involved in alcohol-related fatal crashes – .16%

Estimated alcohol-related traffic injuries - 513,000 (1 per minute)

Alcohol-involved fatalities – 1,569 (40% of total fatalities) (4 per day)

Total traffic injuries – 305,827

Alcohol-involved injuries – 31,806 (10.4% of total injuries) (1 every 17 minutes)

Year 2000 – Average BAC of DUI convictees – .163% (112 had BAC’s of .40% or higher!)

Alcohol-related traffic fatalities – 80 (1 every 4.6 days)

Alcohol-related traffic injuries – 1,959 (6 per day)

6 arrests per 1,000 licensed drivers, tied for second-lowest arrest rate in the whole state.

Los Angeles County had 7 arrests per 1,000 licensed drivers; San Diego County had 8; San Bernardino County had 10; statewide 8 arrests per 1,000 licensed drivers.

Change in # of DUI arrests compared to 1999 – 13.8% decrease, largest decrease for large counties.

Conviction rate for DUI arrests in 200092.9% (second only to Tuolumne County, which had 93.9%, but they had less than 700 arrests)
